Marjorie Skidders
Marjorie Kaniehtonkie Skidders is a member of the Bear Clan of the Mohawk of Akwesasne. She has come full circle in her career as an artist, starting out with a bachelor’s degree in art and turning that into a 25-year career in education. After retiring as a school principal, she returned to her roots as an artist focusing on writing and photography, and showing her photographs in local native art markets in 2017. She focuses on portraying Mohawk life through her photos, “We are still carrying out our traditional ceremonies, we are still celebrating life, we are still speaking our language – we are still here. We honor the past and look to the future armed with knowing who we are.”
An award-winning photographer, she has earned awards at the Adirondack Abenaki and Mohawk Art Market, Museum the Ganondagan Museum’s Hodinöhsö:ni’ Art Show, and the Akwesasne Art Market & Juried Art Show in 2022.
A one-woman show of her photography was exhibited in 2024 at St. Lawrence University. Four of her photographs hang in the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Resort, Adirondack Museum, Iroquois Museum, and the Kahnawake Kanien’kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language & Cultural Center (KOR).
