Mary Jacobs

Mary Jacobs: Seneca Nation, Turtle Clan, Cattaraugus Territory, Irving, New York. Inspired by her surrounding environment in upstate New York and her own cultural history, she creates traditional Iroquois raised beadwork. Through research of antique creations, her work includes traditional patterns and designs. While using elements such as artisan glass, semi-precious and precious stone beads in floral designs, textiles and leather, all her pieces tell a story. The most enjoyable of her pieces to make is the pin cushion beaded bird. Once a traded tourist item along the Niagara Falls region, she has given it a modern design aesthetic with bright colors and quality materials. With her knowledge and experience, she also shares her teachings to members of her community through lectures, displays, and classes. While inspiring others in the art of beadwork, she hopes to revive and continue cultural traditions.
