The Collaboration

Kevin Gotkin worked with Creatives Rebuild New York on several initiatives to advance Deaf and disability artistry across the state. These included: a plain language initiative to find and share the best practices for making written materials more cognitively accessible; a program series called “Access Access” for artists and organizations to root deeper in commitments to disability community; an interview research project about employment for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent, and Mad artists and artists working on projects related to these identities, communities, and histories; a national convening of experts about protecting access to public benefit programs while getting cash and income to artists; and more. This program allowed Gotkin to continue editing their popular weekly newsletter, Crip News. Time for their artistic practice also supported their curation and performance work in “An Evening of Access Magic” and “Cultivating Access Ecologies” at Lincoln Center in the summers of 2023 and 2024. They were able to spend more time in community with stewards of queer and crip land projects in Tennessee and Pennsylvania, including at the 2023 and 2024 Honcho Campout festivals. Gotkin was also able to make major moves toward a forthcoming book manuscript.

The Organization

Creatives Rebuild New York (CRNY) is a three-year, $125 million investment in the financial stability of New York State artists and the organizations that employ them. CRNY provides guaranteed income and employment opportunities for 2,700 artists whose primary residence is in New York State. These two programs work to alleviate unemployment of artists, continue the creative work of artists in partnership with organizations and their communities, and enable artists to continue working and living in New York State under less financial strain.
