The Collaboration

Myna Majors and Sandra Rivera worked with Dances For A Variable Population (DVP) on programs to engage older adult communities in creative movement. The artists collaborated with DVP to develop new hip hop dance and flamenco-infused versions of DVP’s Movement Speaks® program. In Harlem and the Bronx, they engaged older adults as movers and movement creators. They provided training and mentoring to DVP teaching artists while learning from them, and identified older adult participants to take on paid teaching roles. Myna and Sandra also created and performed works in DVP’s free public Revival series. These included dances honoring beloved individuals lost during the pandemic (Revival: Revelries), and new works inspired by great dance works and artists of the 20th Century — celebrating works by Tina Ramirez and Chuck Brown (Revival: Then and Now). They toured these and other works in workshop/performance programs at senior centers across New York City.

The Organization

Founded in 2005, Dances For A Variable Population (DVP) is a multigenerational dance company and educational organization that promotes strong and creative movement among older adults, building creativity, improving mental/physical health, and enhancing quality of life. Through fun, lively, and beautifully executed choreography, DVP makes inclusive dance that engages communities as participants and audience members.
