The Collaboration

Gibril Ceesay, Ayishetu Mamudu, and Hamidu Yussif worked with the New York branch of the Global Deaf Muslims Federation (GDMF) to foster an exchange of perspectives and creativity. They explored themes of identity, communication, and community within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Muslim population while advocating for American Sign Language (ASL) accessibility for their community in New York state. Through in-person meetings and interactive ASL sessions, they led expressive arts projects that incorporated sign language, visual arts, and storytelling. These initiatives not only empowered Deaf Muslims to share their narratives but also highlighted the richness of their cultural heritage and the challenges faced in a hearing-dominated society. In Rochester, NY, they emphasized the importance of providing interpreters at Friday prayers in mosques, ensuring equal access to Islamic discussions and information that many were otherwise missing. The collaboration culminated in a public exhibition at the Deaf Muslims Expo (DME). DME has been able to serve as a platform for dialogue, education, and advocacy, promoting greater awareness and understanding of Deaf Muslim experiences in the local community.
