The Collaboration
Taij Moteelall joined Jahajee to engage with Indo-Caribbean survivors of domestic violence and the larger Indo-Caribbean community in southern Queens and the Bronx. The collaboration produced “Jahajees Rising,” an episodic TV series that delves into the vibrant yet tumultuous world of “Little Guyana” in Queens, NY, revealing the Indo-Caribbean community’s rich heritage and struggle with gender-based violence. When a brutal attack by her partner on New Year’s Eve shatters her world, an undocumented immigrant mother must choose between silent survival and fighting for gender justice, while navigating a tangled love triangle, uncovering family secrets, and ultimately healing generational trauma.
Inspired by a true story (the first homicide in NYC in 2018) “Jahajees Rising” was produced in partnership with Jahajee: Indo-Caribbeans for Gender Justice (Jahajee), Media Sutra, and EnchantedBlue Media. The series is designed to shift narratives that normalize gender-based violence and to explore restoration over retribution when the people we love cause harm. Taij and Jahajee are also developing a comprehensive impact campaign for the series, rooted in healing, grassroots organizing, and political action. They will engage the Indo-Caribbean community and organizations on the front lines of gender justice movements, using the series as a platform to shift culture, mobilize communities, and advance transformative justice.
