The Collaboration
Sebastian Angel and Crystal Clarity worked with Mayday Space to create art programs that are accessible to all in the Bushwick community. Sebastian created a free music program for BIPOC youth, instructing them in a variety of instruments and music traditions from bullerengue of Colombia to soca from the Caribbean. Two bands were born from this project and they have consistently performed in local events for the Brooklyn community. Crystal facilitated a variety of art workshops over two years, including the weekly Open Lab and Drawing Class. The Open Lab provided a space for all artists to come together and work on their independent projects in an art studio with guidance and the opportunity to collaborate. Crystal’s drawing classes have been a free opportunity for the community to learn drawing as catharsis. She also directed a variety of workshops in mediums such as 3D construction, banner production, and stencil and wheatpaste. Both artists collaborated on a cantastoria project that was presented at Mayday’s flagship event, the Mayday Festival of Resistance.
The Organization
Mayday Space is a multi-story organizing center and social hub in Bushwick. Mayday is both a local resource for engaging programming, a home for radical ideas and debate, and a welcoming gathering place for people and movements to work, learn, celebrate, and build together. We work with long-time community organizers to amplify neighborhood issues such as immigrant rights, food justice, tenants protections, gentrification, and displacement as well as broader global issues.
