The Collaboration

PACCNY collaborated with artists Kofi Antwi and Bennie Guzman to create a creative writing/poetry program and arts-for-mindfulness program within the Syracuse community. The collaboration focused on allowing youth to share their stories through poetry and creative writing and offered a safe space for women of color, coping with some of the mental health challenges facing the community. Kofi served as the lead creative expression facilitator, leading the after school Creative Arts Academy program as well as the Black Fusion Writing Workshop for adults, with a culminating poetry collection of student-led work in progress. Bennie worked with La Casita Cultural Center to create a mindfulness and art therapy program for mothers and women, with writing and art making workshops integrated. Both artists also participated in PACCNY programming offering workshops to organization members and the community at large.

The creative writing program continues to gather useful resource materials/contacts to establish a community of writers, while the mental wellness program uses creative arts therapy techniques to explore cultural norms and behaviors as they relate to people of color, in addressing mental health.

The Organization

Recognizing the need for an organization that would engage in fostering the unity of people of African origin (African-American, African-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx and others) in Central New York and beyond, a group of concerned individuals in Syracuse came together and formed PACCNY; an organization that seeks to engage in activities that promote understanding among all global communities, especially those who suffer from oppressive structures and systems.
