The Collaboration
Artists Mary Jacobs, Samantha Jacobs, Peter Jones, and Darelyn Spruce worked with Seneca Nation of Indians – Stanley “Sully” Huff Heritage Center to spread Haudenosaunee culture and arts education in the community. Mary and Samantha led beading classes in schools, colleges, and libraries where they taught how to make traditional Haudenosaunee regalia and the accompanying accessories. High school students learned to make outfits for graduation. Several participants have made creations that they’ve been able to market on their own at vendor events, learning to earn income through their art or winning prizes at local art shows. Classes have also been designed to raise awareness of social issues. The pair also extended their classes into the schools that service the Cattaraugus Territory, where some elder women have formed the Catt Rez Beaders group, meeting weekly for beading and crafting as a self-sustaining community group.
The Organization
The Stanley “Sully” Huff Heritage Center, also known as “The Sully,” is located on the Cattaraugus Territory of the federally recognized Seneca Nation of Indians. The Sully preserves the Seneca language and traditional crafts through community classes and after-school programs for children.
